Don’t even bother trying to figure out the convoluted storyline of “Anything Goes.” P. G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton were the original creative team, but it required a major rewrite by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse before it hit Broadway in 1934 (and ran for 420 performances in the midst of a recession). Over the years, it’s spawned many revivals, revisions and two film versions. This production is the revival (with a new book by Crouse’s son Timothy and John Weidman) which opened on Broadway in 1987 with Patti LuPone in the Reno Sweeney role.

Now try to follow the wacky story line, Billy Crocker (versatile Adam Cotugno) ballet shoes purple wall art - art - printable watercolor - modern minimalist poster - printable sign - digital print tells Reno (who has a romantic interest in him) that he has fallen in love with a young woman without even knowing her name, When he shows up the next morning at a cruise dock to wish Reno bon voyage and deliver some papers to his Wall Street boss Elisha Whitney (a disarmingly funny Ron Dritz), who is sailing that day on the S.S, American from New York to London, he spots the girl, socialite Hope Harcourt (a too-subdued Samantha Cardenas), and instantly decides to stow away on the ship, Fortunately for Billy, he inadvertently helps gangster Moonface Martin (a mobile-faced Ray D’Ambrosio) and his man-hungry girlfriend Erma (delightful Katherine Goldman), so they, eventually, give Billy the passport and ticket intended for their gangster buddy Snake Eyes Johnson, who was a no-show..

From there on, it’s all a lot of madcap mayhem as Billy tries to woo Hope away from her stuffy, American-slang-loving British fiancé Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (remarkable and resourceful Tomas Theriot). He also has to keep a few steps ahead of the ship’s captain and crew, who are searching for a stowaway. This requires disguising Billy as everything from a sailor to a bearded passenger (the beard courtesy of hair from a pet dog). It’s all totally silly — and mostly quite agreeable, thanks to quick pacing and skillful performances from many of the leads and supporting actors.

Cotugno ballet shoes purple wall art - art - printable watercolor - modern minimalist poster - printable sign - digital print shows considerable charm and comic timing as Billy, and if the high notes in his songs aren’t quite reachable without a little quiver, it’s a minor flaw, Playing his love interest, Cardenas is demure and sings sweetly, though her stiff, unnatural dance poses are distracting (and she needs brighter colors rather than the washed-out lavender gowns she wore), D’Ambrosio is a revelation, showing great comedy chops and a surprisingly good voice on “Friendship” and “Be Like the Bluebird.” Mark Alabanza deserves special mention as the most versatile actor in the cast, starting out as the bartender Fred, then becoming the ship’s purser, later a minister and often one of the cadre of singing and dancing passengers in other scenes..

All four of Reno’s “angels” (Melissa Heinrich as Purity, Catrina Manahan as Chastity, Minna Rogers as Charity and Adrienne Herro as Virtue) are chorus-girl perfection with their platinum blonde wigs, sparkly costumes and dance versatility. But it’s Jaime as Reno who commands every scene she’s in, showing her vulnerability with Billy (her loyalty to him as well), providing great harmony in the “Friendship” number with Cotugno and D’Ambrosio, and nailing every nuance of her role. And that’s before she ever starts tap-dancing.

Tribuzi gets it right on the production number “Anything Goes” which ends Act 1, but not before Reno, her angels and a sailor-suited crew storm around the stage, smiling broadly while tapping, singing and dancing their hearts out, It’s literally a crescendo of happiness, While all this is going on, lighting designer Michael Ramsaur turns the ship set gorgeous shades of blue, pink and purple, That’s the way to send the audience into the lobby ballet shoes purple wall art - art - printable watercolor - modern minimalist poster - printable sign - digital print wanting to come back for more..

Act 2 begins as somewhat of a let-down, with its myriad mistaken identities and the audience knowing all the while who will end up with whom in the final scene. But then in walks Jaime as an evangelist, admonishing all the sinners on board to confess as she belts out “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” (featuring a knockout trumpet solo by John Morillas). There’s much to appreciate in this Broadway By The Bay production, not the least of which is the big (really big) ship liner set, featuring a second-story of cabins. At times Ramsaur slides in two cabins (one from each side) when scenes require an indoor setting. John Hayward’s sound design works well in the cavernous Fox Theatre, and Margaret Toomey’s flashy costumes and authentic-looking sailor suits are solid.

When R&B legend Allen Toussaint and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band join forces at the Bankhead Theater on Nov, 20, expect a one-and-done sonic storm, And then, much like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 — an event whose repercussions still tousle the New Orleans-based musicians — their mighty winds will move on, leaving ripples and perhaps irrevocably changing ballet shoes purple wall art - art - printable watercolor - modern minimalist poster - printable sign - digital print a few lives, Too grand a claim? Not really, because it happened to Ben Jaffe, the 40-year-old director of the 54-year-old jazz band, when he first encountered Toussaint in the 1970s..
