By Joanne Engelhardt. For The Daily News. In a way, Broadway by the Bay’s production of “Dreamgirls” is a coming-of-age for the venerable Peninsula theater company, which went through some rough financial times two years ago. At that time, even its move to the Fox Theatre in Redwood City was a risk. But with the production of “Evita” in March and now “Dreamgirls,” things should be looking up. These are excellent productions despite the fact there’s not a single Equity actor in them.

Most people are familiar with the 2006 film of “Dreamgirls” and Jennifer Hudson’s stunning portrayal of Effie White, while the play — which opened in 1981 and won six Tony Awards the following year — is not as well known, This production is a good opportunity to get reacquainted with the story without the distraction of the star power of Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and company, Written by Tom Eyen and produced and choreographed on Broadway by the unparalleled Michael Bennett (“A printable - the 'anneli' birthday invitation | ballet | tutu | dance Chorus Line”), it’s a retelling of a familiar story of a rhythm-and-blues group (think The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown and others) which tries out its act at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York and — miraculously — gets a big break..

Scenic designer Kelly Tighe’s easily adaptable set consists of three Erector-set-type structures that can be rolled, turned and attached to one another very quickly. The largest structure becomes the main stage and is used for many scenes: Sometimes the action is in front of the curtain, sometimes it’s backstage. The “curtains” themselves are terrific: One is all silver tinsel; another flutters down from above, and another time the curtain becomes solid. Margaret Toomey’s costumes are certainly a highlight here: So many sparkle and shimmer from the first scene — screaming-red sequin dresses worn by a trio of singers, shirred, long, white gowns with a black flounce, and just about every other outfit.

Angela Farr Schiller directs this musical with verve and audacity, printable - the 'anneli' birthday invitation | ballet | tutu | dance and there’s seldom a time when someone isn’t singing, dancing or having a loud, heated conversation, The acting is almost uniformly top-notch, starting with the earthy, heartfelt performance of Miranda D, Lawson as Effie, She has the audience in the palm of her hands for most of the show, but most especially for her achingly compassionate vocal of the best song in the musical: “(And I Am Telling You) I’m Not Going.” It sent waves of shivers through the theater..

As the extroverted entertainer James “Thunder” Early, Dedrick Weathersby channels a suave version of Michael Jackson, replete with just the right hairdo and some “Thriller”-type dance moves. As the conniving Curtis Taylor Jr., a used-car salesman who becomes the manager of the three gullible young women from Chicago, Anthone D. Jackson is suitably both disarming and disgusting (and he has an excellent voice as well). Majesty Scott as Lorrell, one of The original Dreams, is a good match (and foil) for the arrogant Jimmy Early, and she has stage presence galore.

It’s unfortunate that as Deena Jones, the Dreamgirl who is picked over Effie to take the lead role, Janelle LaSalle is too darned sweet and doesn’t seem savvy enough to carry off printable - the 'anneli' birthday invitation | ballet | tutu | dance the change from back-up singer to star, She tries mightily and occasionally succeeds, but she’s sometimes weak vocally, especially when up against the mighty pipes of Lawson, Aejay Mitchell as Effie’s brother, C.C., and Kelvyn Mitchell (no relation to Aejay) as Jimmy Early’s first agent, Marty, are both effective in their roles..

Choreographer Robyn Tribuzi gets her ensemble jivin’ and jigglin’ most of the time, and the male dancers backing up the smooth-stepping Weathersby are all excellent. Highlights are “Cadillac Car” with Jackson, Weathersby, both Mitchells and the ensemble; “Fake Your Way to the Top” featuring Weathersby, the Jimmy Early Band and the Dreamettes (before being renamed The Dreams and, later, Dreamgirls; “Got to be Good Times” featuring “The Four Tuxedos,” and “Rap” with Weathersby, Jackson, James Devreaux Louis and LaSalle.

The lighting by Seamus Strahan-Mauk is striking, with the curtain changing color to emulate a different stage in a different city, But Jon Hayward’s sound is a problem, Many times the men’s lines (and occasionally some of the women’s as well) couldn’t be heard, Whether this was strictly a sound issue is uncertain because there are times when the 13-piece orchestra lead by conductor/keyboardist Sean Kana is blaring out too loudly while some lines are being delivered, That’s not to say the orchestra isn’t good, Whenever they are playing without competing with actors printable - the 'anneli' birthday invitation | ballet | tutu | dance saying their lines or singers struggling to sing loudly enough to be heard, they did a bang-up job with Henry Krieger’s lively score..
