By Paul Freeman, For The Daily News, The magic of “South Pacific” seems eternal, Based on several stories from James A, Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Tales of the South flavortools k092 ballet slippers pretzel kids chocolate candy mold with exclusive flavortools copyrighted chocolate molding inst Pacific,” the musical focuses on an island-based World War II American nurse, She falls in love with a plantation owner who has mixed-race children, Another romance also tackles the issue of prejudice, as a U.S, lieutenant agonizes over the potential stigma that could come from marrying his Asian girlfriend..

With songs by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, the musical premiered on Broadway in 1949 and ran for nearly 2,000 performances. It earned 10 Tony Awards. Successful movie and TV adaptations were produced. Thanks to such enduring tunes as “Some Enchanted Evening” and “Bali Ha’i,” the 2008 Broadway revival was also a hit, capturing seven Tonys. Milissa Carey, who is directing a production of the show at Foothill Music Theatre, talks about the show’s timelessness.

“Partly, it’s the score, which is so beautiful, And the book is so well crafted that people call it a play with music, The songs weave so nicely in and out of these two parallel love stories, set against the backdrop of the war, There’s a remarkable confluence of elements, The writing is way ahead of its time, where the conflict in the love stories has to do with race, We do live in a much more multicultural America now, but the issue of racism is flavortools k092 ballet slippers pretzel kids chocolate candy mold with exclusive flavortools copyrighted chocolate molding inst still prevalent, “The leading lady, Nellie, a blonde nurse from Arkansas, has to come to terms with the fact that the way that she was brought up is causing her to lose someone she loves, and be hurtful to someone she loves, We all have some sort of transition in our life, where we have to come to terms with who we want to be and who we were brought up to be, And maybe there are things we need to change,” says Carey, “That conflict within the leading lady gives us a really interesting story.”..

Redwood City’s Doug Brees, a business analyst for the City of Palo Alto Utilities, plays Navy Cmdr. William Harbison. “It deals with issues that are still prevalent,” says Brees. “There is still racism in this country. Sadly, it’s not going away anytime soon. It seems like you always have to work at this. There are always misperceptions and misconceptions about people who are different from you.”. San Jose’s Stephen Boisvert, who last trod the Foothill boards in “Anything Goes,” and whose operatic voice has graced numerous local companies, including Opera San Jose, plays Luther Billis in “South Pacific.” Luther, the womanizing sailor, leads the Seabees in a robust “There Is Nothing Like a Dame” and dons a grass skirt to dance with Nellie Forbush (portrayed by Madison Genovese) in the “Honeybun” number.

“The Rodgers and Hammerstein songs are wonderful,” Boisvert says, “But it’s also the story that people connect with, It’s a key point in our history, at the beginning of America getting involved in World War II, There are some hefty issues brought up, There are a lot of light, fun songs in it, like ‘I’m flavortools k092 ballet slippers pretzel kids chocolate candy mold with exclusive flavortools copyrighted chocolate molding inst Going To Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,’ but there’s a serious situation going on in the background, which comes through clearly in the script.”..

The cast and crew have developed a solid sense of teamwork, says Carey, who teaches at Foothill College. “It is often a three-ring circus, so we’ve got a fantastic music director (Mark Hanson) and a fantastic choreographer (Michael Ryken). The three of us have worked together before and we’re very collaborative. We’ve got some tremendously talented principals. And I’m always happy when we can bring in a lot of young people for the ensemble. For many of them, this is their first show. So having them learning how to be in a musical, on such a great musical, it has been terrific to watch them embody these sailors, soldiers and nurses.”.

She had each cast member write a character biography and bring in a photo from the World War II era, So even ensemble characters who went unnamed in the script suddenly had full back stories, “An ensemble is made of individuals,” Carey says, “and each of them has a story, flavortools k092 ballet slippers pretzel kids chocolate candy mold with exclusive flavortools copyrighted chocolate molding inst For many of these performers, this was their first opportunity to really think about what it would be like to be drafted and shipped off to war, separated from their loved ones, So they really explored who these people were and what their lives were like, They get to be more grounded as actors, in the moment, We’re going to post those biographies out front, for the audience to look at before the show and at intermission.”..
